In this selection, I tried to adhere a bit more strictly to the guidelines of the assignment. The non-profile shots I took weren’t really of a suitable facial expression, so here we are. The black and white accent in this one serves to accentuate her unique and beautiful features (yes, I am very biased!)

So maybe the background isn’t as simple as it should be, and the cropping is horizontally oriented instead of vertical. But I really love this shot. The subject is my lovely fiancée, Courtney. Due to the angle at which she is looking out the window, relative to my position with the camera, her reflection does not appear symmetrically. It almost looks like she’s at a moment of pause, during an intense conversation with another person. After dabbling with black and white in Picasa, I decided that the colors better served the image; especially with regard to delineating the reflection.

This is the photo that I already uploaded but you might be able to see it better in this one. I cropped it on Picasa. I really enjoyed taking this class. I liked looking at all the different shots and technical stuff about taking pictures. I didnt know it was so much but I guess a picture is worth a thousand words! I also liked reading other peoples feed back on my photos, and to the person that did the pennys in the snow (macro) that picture is always in my mind good job. Good luck everybody on your grades!

This one never made it to Photothing. Just wasn't happy with it. I just sharpened it some in Pi. I remember trying to get closer to it and the image kept going out of focus. I think I got a little better about that later in the week.... but the sun was gone by then!

A snowy day looking for light that refuses to come out. This is a view of the side of our apartment on Prospect. That face is of a woman wearing a lioness headress. She has a beguiling smile. If I had an extension ladder or could hang out the window and extend the camera way out in front, perhaps I could have gotten a great close-up. hmmm...

Photothing isn't going to let me post anymore since I'm maxed out from last night.

We all remember that period of time when the sun refused to come out for what seemed like days on end. I walked around the cinder-block Gothic Revival "mansion" where we live on Prospect St. (that's our apartment on the left above) Something about the snow falling down around this old building seemed like a good combination of elements - But I really needed some light on it to shoot!

Alas, we find ourselves at the end of class! You have been a great group... the quality of the work is as good as I have ever seen submitted.... I hope you enjoyed this experience and that it was worthwhile for you... You now have much stronger photography skills to take you forward from here....

I will be doing the grading on Sunday around noon... So you have about 24 hrs to submit more work if you need to both here on the blog and in your fotothing portfolio...

Hello class, yesterday I uploaded a photo from the school computer and it seemed fairly easy, but when I got home and pasted it to paint shop all the internet stuff showed up on the top, bottom, and sides.Did anyone have that problem? Well anyway I saved it from paint shop to my travel drive then uploaded it through Picasa and cropped all the extra out. I decided to call it Party Hard because the music is always in my head and I love to party. Enjoy

Hi all, Ok so i have totally changed my mind this was the hardest thing the transformation from the website to the blogspot. I really enjoyed it though because you get to be creative and create your own photo. I called it the eye of the beholder because in my eye I see war and inocent people dieing everyday very disturbing. I am anti war, but to those who are for the war they might see something differnt like defeat against the enemy. Hope you like it!

I thought I had it figured out but I am still unable to save the image as a jpeg for some reason...very frustrating, my computer just wont let me do it, it only gives me the option to save it as a .bmp file under the edit>copy to command...I don't get it...if anyone knows how to remedy this, I could definitely use the info, as I'm not currently able to save my work to my fotothing account...

The top picture repersents global warming. As you notice there is no more land on earth and the birds are the only survivors left. They have no place to go but space. The bottom picture is a drawing that I wanted to use light and shadows.

I wanted to say this class has open my eyes to how I see things different. I never really knew what photographers were looking at when they took pictures. Now I have a much better understanding and a much greater apprection towards photography. I really want to get more involved in photography since I now see the beauty in it. It was a pleasure to view everyone's pictures. You all did a great job from what I saw; I also want to thank Jerry for making this a great and fun class that I truely enjoyed.

In the image on the left, I copied and didn't deselect the last image I adjusted and, unfortunately, exited out of the painting before realizing that, but I don't think it takes away from the painting! Hi Class, this is my son Alfonzo he is 15 months. This by far was the hardest task for me I started off taking pictures of my 5 year old but he kept laughing and I wanted to get a real expression. I dont really konw what he was looking at but whatever it was has his attention. Notice his eyebrow is slightly arched. I added the black and white effect and shadowed it a little so that my reflection wouldnt be so clear in the door because I was standing on the other side.

This is not my work. My fifteen year old daughter, Lexi ask if I would post this shot of herself on the class blog for your honest opinion. It is a picture of herself that SHE took. I had recently upgrade my camera from a HP 3.0 mega to a Canon Rebel XT. I had given her the HP camera as a gift. Looks like she has a new hobby. Nice job Lexi .

How to Save Your Surreal Assignment

I just received this email from one of the students in the class....

I having a hard time understanding the directions for saving our surrealpainting. I have followed the directions that are posted on the syllabus, however when I hit the print scrn button on my computer keyboard nothing is happening. Is there another method that I should be using. Please help.

The issue is that the Atheneum uses a Java application and the resulting image can't be copied by just right clicking on it... so you have to use the print screen button to put an image of everything on your monitor screen into memory... Here is my answer:

Yes... print screen puts the image of your whole computer screen in memory... now you need to open Paint (Start button>All Programs>Accessories>Paint) and paste the screen there with an edit>paste. Now select the area of your picture using the rectangle selector in the upper right part of the tools palette.... Choose Edit>Copy To, name the file, put it where you can find it (the desktop is convenient) ... Now upload to fotothing and the blog and you are all set....

This is my 10 month old son. As you can imagine it was very difficult to capture this shot. It was taken in front a window with a white wall background. The reflection of the blinds is present in the background. I love how the black and white reflects his innocents.

These are photos of my daughter lexi. I used a white sheet to help reflec the light back to her face (I hope I did it the right way). I also used a tripod to keep my camera still. My camera has the built -in-flash and it will pop up in low light, so I adjusted the Basic Zone Mode button to "sport". I must admit I took a little while to try and figure this try out.

This shot was taken from a flower arrangement that was left on my desk at work. The flower was dying so I changed it to black and white and added a glow to give the appearance of a healthier flower and a more vintage look. I really love working with black and white photos. I think the picture really grabs your eye more than color.

I love this shot. I found it somewhat difficult to capture this at the right angle. I changed it to black and white and added to different effects from Picasa to give it more clarity. I posted this particular shot in a small format than normal because I think a smaller size just adds to beautification of the shot.

I like the way the shadows and light reflecting on both these portrait pictures. The top picture is a portrait of my girlfriend by the window. The bottom picture is a portrait of my brother-in-law looking out the window without him realizing I was going to take the picture. Surprise pictures seem to come out the best.

Okay....I had a hard time trying to get someone who was willing to pose for me. My girlfriend allowed me to take pictures of her daughter. However it was a bit challenging because she did not want to stay still and felt that what I was doing was boaring (smile). She was good sport anyhow. It was not very sunny when I took these pictures but hopefully I improvised well. In picasa I crop some of the pictures, used B&W and tuning.

I thought this was an interesting composition. I felt that many of the outdoor macro shots I took were very busy, with an inordinate amount of detail distracting the eye from the main subject. But, pennies on a snow bank; it doesn’t get much simpler than that. The macro aspect allows for much more detailed examination of the crystallization of the snow. The currency we value the least, held up by an ephemeral substance that will eventually melt into nothingness. How metaphorically transcendent!

I did all of my macro project work outside, on a bright and sunny day. I didn’t have many floral elements to consider in my compositions, so I improvised. I found a tree that was secreting sap. A trail of hard-working ants industriously climbed up and down, carrying as much as they could. It was difficult to get good focus in this composition because the subjects were moving so quickly. I took several shots in anticipation of blur. This was one of the best. I like the shadow.

I discovered that if I held my elbows in, I had an easier time holding the camera still. This rose was in a vase on the kitchen table. It was early in the morning. When I went to take the picture, I got the raise flash message. I didn't and there seemed to be plenty of light.

An ever expanding begonia sits near our living room window. This leaf has a assymetrical shape and is about as centered in the shot as I could get it. I love getting as close as I can and now I'm thinking that I need a better camera in order to get closer and still be in focus! There's some form of intangible mystery that comes alive when we look real close at something. Learning a lot in this exercise.

Light was streaming through the window where this flower was. After repeated out-of-focus shots I backed off just enough but I think I'll back off even more and take it again tommorrow. Sharpened it some in Pi. Still the pistil doesn't have the clarity I'm looking for. But I do love the way the light comes through and that "air brushed" quality even as the shot goes out of focus on the edges. hmm.

The top picture was taken back in January at West Haven Beach. To give it a little more detail I sharpen the picture and cropped it plus changed it to B&W. The bottom picture was taken last week from my house in West Haven that I am in the process of remodeling. I found this miniature statue in a box and decided to take a macro picture of it to give it the effect of a life size model. I put the statue up against a blue background. I added a soft focus and focal B&W to enhance the picture.

I went to the nursey department of Home Depot and was able to capture these pictures. In picasa I did some croping, a little sharpening, saturation and tuning. I found this week a little more challenging because I had a hard time getting a clear and focused picture using the digital camera to get the macro shot.

I enjoy the singularity of this shot, as well as the off-center perspective. It’s almost like the lone tree is a sundial, on a plate made of snow. I agonized over whether or not to use Picasa’s “auto contrast” fix for this shot. I felt the original was a bit too soft, but the auto-contrast version was too “loud.” In the end I opted for black & white.

I felt this particular image was interesting because of the sprawling spider web of shadows. I am reminded of the Ents, from Lord of the Rings. I had to crop out some unrelated visual noise with Picasa, and straighten it a little.

I don’t feel this week’s submissions represent my best work, but it certainly wasn’t for lack of trying. The sun and my schedule never seemed to achieve synchronization. Whenever I had free time to work on the shots, it was overcast and difficult to do any really interesting work with light and shadow. In any case, I am impressed by much of what I’ve seen for week 4. My classmates have really done some amazing work.

My mother sent me flowers for the reason of "hanging in there." I've been very sick with the flu, which nearly became pneumonia & in the last week, had my bank robbed & have been really trying to find the time, strength, and sanity to get my artistic side in order.

This gerber daisy is part of an arrangement that I edited in Picasa using the B&W Focal Point Color option, as well as sharpening everything up. I am sorry I haven't posted as much as I'd like, but make no mistake, in the next week, you'll be seeing a bit more! :)

The roses were a Valentine's Day present from my other half. ;) At least we got our money's worth!

Hi class, I know I was supposed to upload these phots to my fotothing but I wanted to make sure everyone checked them out. When I first took the shot it was really black so I uploaded it to my Picasa and added light. I then observed the picture and I saw the image which looks like a skeletal face(top photo)I then cropped it (bottom photo) so that you could see it a litttle better. The face includes both eyes a nose and what could be a mouth.Can you see it?

The more I look at this one, the more I like it. After squinting at it for awhile the frenetic energy and strength of the line almost began to remind me of a Jackson Pollock painting. Picasa's b/w filter just accentuated the abstract expressionist feel.

Were you out to see the eclipse tonight? I went out in my backyard with camera and tripod to capture the total lunar eclipse ... and the last for 3 more years... Two stars joined the show... in the upper right, Regulus, the brightest star in the zodiac constellation Leo ad in the lower left, the planet Saturn. The orange glow on the moon is the glow from the earth of all the combined sunrises and sunsets ringing the earth during the total eclipse....

The other image is from the point at my house... more of the Winter fog at sunset on Umpawaug Pond...

I like these two pictures. The picture on top is a picture of my cat looking out my bedroom window. This picture was one of those pictures I happen to catch at the right time, a sihouette of the cat. The bottom picture shows the trunk of the tree while the shadow shows the full outline.

This is a tree outside my house. The photo is grainy I know and also not the best focus, but I chose it because I put alot of work in to it. It was about 6:00am and very dark outside and I was in my dining room trying to take pictures in the pitch dark without a flash. The shadow looked excellent in the window but when I uploaded it the photo was just a picture of black I thought maybe I could fix it with Picasa I usesd the basic tuning and played with the photo for at least an hour. I couldnt give you the total effect of the shadow, yet I think you get the picture.

This photo was taken in woodbridge in a little stone garage. I assumed that this was a back door that lead into the yard of the abbandoned house on the other side, however I was to scared to walk around and find out. I croped the top of the garage of so that the main focus would be the door shadow and the the condition of the garage. I also used the sepia effect and added brightness so that the shadow would really glow.

Hi Class, My photo is late because I couldnt decide if I wanted to use it as my week 3 assignment for the beach or my week 4 assignment for shadows. I love the shadows that are in the sky. It was raining and very dark so I didnt have to edit much. I decided to use the photo for week 3 because the beach is such a bright and sunny place to be, but on this day it looks very gloomy almost like a hurricane is on the way! The waves were very high and the winds were very strong and the smell of the ocean was terrible. You can see how high the tide was on the side of the pier. Oh and by the way this is a photo taken at West Haven Beach.

I've been mesmerized by the remains of an old iron gate that a tree is absorbing and have taken lots of shots of it in different kinds of light. This one was late afternoon when the sun was casting long shadows. Sharpened it and increased the shadow feature and tint in Pi. My dog was very patient and seemed to sense that something was up. After reading White's discussion of Equivalence, a lot of things make more sense as to why I'm drawn to take specific shots -- metaphorical resonance.

Captured a few shots at a nearby park today...got out later than I had planned so I was chasing the light as the shadows got longer, receding into the distance...I think I managed to get a few decent ones though...This tree, in particular, resonated for me with the concept of equivalence which Minor White so eloquently describes in his essay....

Week 4: Light and Shadow

Went to visit family in Mass. this weekend and was surprised to see the snow. The light was just right on Saturday afternoon. It took me at least an hour to drive 2 miles, as I kept pulling over to take pictures. I loved the way the light hit the snow and the old headstones shadows.

The biggest Puddle ever

I chose this picture because it looks like a pond, but it is a huge puddle. It was raining outside today and when I saw it I lauged because the birds and ducks are just swimming in it like it is a huge pond. I didnt crop the extra photo of the top because I wanted you to be able to really believe it was a puddle.

FYI: As of Monday morning (the 18th), fotothing.com appears to be down. It is now 8:40 AM and I have been trying to get on to the site for about 20 minutes. Not sure how long it's been like this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are these "shadow" shots. I focus the camera on "wide" and took two shots of the clouds. No special effects were needed or applied to these two photos.
